The only U.S. state that borders exactly one other state is Maine. Located in the northeastern corner of the country, Maine shares a land border only with New Hampshire to the west. To the north and east, Maine is bordered by Canada (the provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick), while the Atlantic Ocean lies to the southeast.
Maine’s geographic isolation from other U.S. states is due to its position in New England, where it juts out into the Atlantic and is separated from the rest of the country by forests, mountains, and the Canadian border.
Maine became the 23rd state in 1820 as part of the Missouri Compromise, separating from Massachusetts, which had previously governed it as a district. Since then, its border with New Hampshire has remained unchanged, reinforcing its status as the only state with just one U.S. neighbor.
Despite its relative geographic isolation, Maine is known for its rich maritime history, stunning rocky coastline, and vast forests. It is famous for its lobster industry, Acadia National Park, and Mount Katahdin, the endpoint of the Appalachian Trail. Maine’s location near Canada has also influenced its culture, with a notable French-speaking population in some areas.
