Vincent van Gogh.
The famed artist who shot himself in the chest in a village outside of Paris in 1890 was Vincent van Gogh. One of the most influential figures in the history of Western art, Van Gogh is known for his emotionally charged paintings and distinctive post-impressionist style, marked by bold colors and expressive brushwork.
Van Gogh spent the final months of his life in the small French village of Auvers-sur-Oise, located just northwest of Paris. He moved there in May 1890 after being released from a mental asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he had undergone treatment for severe psychological issues. In Auvers, Van Gogh was under the care of Dr. Paul Gachet and continued to paint prolifically, creating more than 70 works in just over two months.
Despite his creative output, Van Gogh continued to struggle with his mental health. On July 27, 1890, he walked into a nearby wheat field and shot himself in the chest with a revolver. Remarkably, he managed to walk back to the inn where he was staying. He succumbed to his injuries two days later, on July 29, 1890, at the age of 37. His last words reportedly were, “La tristesse durera toujours” – “The sadness will last forever.”
Van Gogh’s death marked the end of a life filled with inner turmoil, poverty, and emotional instability, yet his legacy as an artist only grew after his passing. Today, works such as Starry Night, Sunflowers, and The Bedroom are among the most celebrated in art history, and Van Gogh is remembered not only for his artistic genius but also for the personal struggles he endured.
