In 1990, Universal Studios opened its first theme park in Florida, emerging as a major rival to Disney in the theme park industry. Officially named Universal Studios Florida, the park opened on June 7, 1990, in Orlando, just a few miles away from Walt Disney World Resort. This strategic move marked Universal’s entry into the competitive world of immersive theme parks in Central Florida, directly challenging Disney’s long-standing dominance in the region.
Universal Studios Florida was designed to offer guests a behind-the-scenes look at movie and television production, a concept that was both educational and entertaining. Unlike Disney’s parks, which focused more on fantasy and fairy tales, Universal’s approach was to bring the excitement of Hollywood to life through thrilling rides, live shows, and attractions based on blockbuster movies. Early attractions included rides inspired by popular films such as Jaws, Back to the Future, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Ghostbusters.
Universal’s launch was not without its problems. On opening day, many of the rides experienced technical difficulties, causing frustration among visitors. However, the company quickly addressed these issues and invested heavily in improvements and new attractions. Over time, the park gained popularity and expanded, eventually growing into the Universal Orlando Resort, which now includes Islands of Adventure, Volcano Bay, and the Epic Universe park set to open soon.
The opening of Universal Studios Florida in 1990 significantly altered the landscape of Central Florida tourism and sparked a long-running competition with Disney that continues to influence the theme park industry today.
