Several vehicles damaged after loose tire bounces around highway in Cupertino

(KRON) — Multiple vehicles were damaged after a tire went loose Wednesday morning on Highway 280 in Cupertino, the Santa Clara County Fire Department (SCCFD) announced. Around 10:34 a.m., fire crews responded to a vehicle crash, which stemmed from the loose tire, on I-280 near Foothill Expressway.

The tire broke off and separated from a vehicle going southbound, officials said. It then bounced into the northbound lanes of I-280, striking another vehicle. More vehicles — although the number wasn’t specified by SCCFD — were damaged while they were trying to avoid the tire.

One vehicle’s windshield was cracked after being struck by the tire (see photo below). No serious injuries were reported, said SCCFD.

SCCFD wrote a list of reminders for drivers to stay safe of incidents like this.

  • Maintain your vehicle. Follow manufacturer’s maintenance schedule, especially for tires, brakes, and suspension.
  • Expect the unexpected. Stay alert and drive defensively.
  • Leave space. Following distance gives you time to react to sudden hazards.
  • Pull to the right and stop for emergency vehicles using sirens and lights—it’s the law and ignoring it delays our arrival to emergencies.
  • Stay focused. When passing an accident scene, keep your eyes on the road. Distraction puts everyone at risk.
