*In a controversial decision, a Burke County, Georgia, grand jury has opted not to indict 28-year-old Hannah G. Cobb, a white woman, in the February shooting death of her 30-year-old Black boyfriend, Telvin Osborne.

District Attorney Jared Williams announced the grand jury’s “no bill” ruling to WRDW on May 23, effectively clearing Cobb of criminal charges in the incident that authorities say involved alcohol and a heated argument. The shooting occurred in the early hours of February 23, when Burke County deputies responded to a call around 5:45 a.m. Cobb initially told officers she was either “clearing or cleaning” her nine-millimeter pistol when it accidentally discharged, striking Osborne.

However, Sheriff Alonzo Williams noted that no evidence supported her claim of cleaning the firearm, and the incident was not officially classified as accidental. Cobb later clarified to deputies that she was inspecting her pistol, a nightly ritual, and believed the safety was engaged when it fired.

Tensions between Cobb and Osborne had reportedly escalated that night. According to Cobb, the couple argued after she suspected Osborne was communicating with another woman. The dispute led to multiple confrontations, culminating in Osborne briefly leaving the residence. Cobb alleged that he returned wielding a knife, intensifying the situation.

Prosecutors stated that Cobb then retreated to a bathroom, threatening self-harm, which prompted Osborne to force his way inside. It was at this point, they allege, that Cobb turned the gun on Osborne and fired the fatal shot.

Following the grand jury’s decision, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement urging the public to remain peaceful.

“While we recognize that this outcome may be upsetting or unpopular to some, we strongly urge everyone to refrain from actions that could further harm our community,” the statement read.

The case has sparked debate in Burke County, with authorities emphasizing the need for calm and unity in the wake of the divisive verdict.
