Dawn Robinson: From Headliner to Homeless: The Journal of Steffanie Rivers

*Is Dawn Robinson the new face of homelessness? The founding member of the group En Vogue and former member of Lucy Pearl recently admitted she has been living in her car for the past three years!

How did this happen, and why would someone with a resume like Robinson’s end up living on the curbside? I read some of the social media comments about it and learned that it’s not uncommon for people to end up living in their vehicles – especially in the entertainment industry – where aspiring artists move to places such as New York, Los Angeles or Atlanta and their careers don’t take off right away. So, for them it might make more sense to live out of their vehicles rather than to spend money on hotels or to stay with family or friends. We all know sometimes those relationships come with drama and chaos that we can do without. Maybe Robinson’s plan was to live in her car for a few weeks. Then it turned into a few years. Who knows.

According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, there were nearly 772,000 Americans who were homeless as of January 2025. Some were because of substance abuse, mental health issues or for a list of other reasons. One of those people is a friend of mine.

Click the video above to find out how he went from earning $85k a year six months ago to living in his car and driving for Door Dash.
