Léon: The Professional.
Jean Reno played a hitman in the 1994 film “Léon: The Professional”, directed by Luc Besson. In this cult classic, Reno portrays the character Léon, a quiet and emotionally detached professional hitman living in New York City. His solitary and regimented life is turned upside down when he becomes the unlikely guardian of a 12-year-old girl named Mathilda, played by a young Natalie Portman in her breakout role.
The film begins when Mathilda’s family is murdered by a corrupt DEA agent, played by Gary Oldman in one of his most memorable and intense performances. Mathilda narrowly escapes and turns to Léon, her reclusive neighbor, for protection. As the story unfolds, she asks Léon to teach her how to “clean” (his euphemism for killing) so she can take revenge for her brother’s death. Despite initial reluctance, Léon agrees to train her, and an unusual bond forms between the two characters – part mentorship, part surrogate family, and deeply emotional.
“Léon: The Professional” is known for its blend of stylized action, emotional depth, and powerful performances. Jean Reno’s portrayal of Léon is particularly praised for its subtlety and humanity. He manages to present a character who is both a deadly assassin and a vulnerable, lonely man capable of compassion. The film balances violence with tenderness, and its themes of redemption, love, and loss have made it a lasting favorite among fans of both action and drama.
The film helped cement Jean Reno’s status as an international star and remains a landmark in 1990s cinema.
